6 Effortless Ways To Save Money This Summer

If you are like most families, you’ve found your spending habits have changed drastically during Covid. Many of you have found your savings accounts have grown and you like the feeling of that.  

Wouldn’t it feel great to keep that saving habit up?

It’s easy to continue to save if you DECIDE to.  There is nothing more powerful than a made up mind.  

A common mistake people make when they earn more is to spend more.  

As things start to open up in our world, think about entering back into the social scene gradually with this new formed habit of saving under your belt.  

Here are some great ways to save this summer but still have fun!

1. Trim up your entertainment budget by $100.

As things slowly start to reopen this summer, it’s going to be pretty easy to cut back on entertainment costs. So that will save you a lot of money right there. But when events start to pick back up where you live, make the most of the free stuff like outdoor concerts, movie-on-the-lawn nights, and free days at local museums.

2. Pocket $400 by skipping the theme park and visiting a natural park instead.

Disney is open again here in California.  Before you drop easily $600 for a day rate on a family of 4 group pack, think about all the free parks available in our local parks!  

3. Earn $100 or more by doing a garage sale. Put your kids to work, they will love earning their own money!

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.  Who doesn’t love a good garage sale? More importantly, who doesn’t love the extra $100 you make from pawning your old stuff onto complete strangers? Now’s the time to hop on that spring-cleaning train, dig through the attic, and start planning a purge!

4. Skip the car wash and save $60–100.

Grab your swimsuit and create a pre-planned water fight with the kids.  They will love it and skipping the car wash six times this summer could save you $60–100! Every week that you’d usually drive through a car wash, transfer $10 into your summer savings account.

5. Earn $50–100 when you sell your old clothes.

I love second hand stores…the GoodWill by my home is called “OC Boutique”.  It’s so fun to get a deal and teach your kids how to do it as well.  Spring cleaning is in full swing! Clean out your closets and take your pre-loved threads to a consignment shop, or sell your clothes from the comfort of your own home through an online marketplace like thredUP or Poshmark. 

6. Stock up on dollar store snacks before a road trip and save $25–50.

Honestly I am not the hugest fan of road trips.  I prefer to hop on a plane and have more time at my destination but whatever your travel method, wouldn’t you agree it’s WAY better to stock up ahead of time versus pay double the price at the airport or road side shop?  

Road trips might look a little different this summer. But no matter where you’re headed for whatever reason, you can still save some money. If you normally stop for snacks while on the road, buying them at the dollar store ahead of time will help you not buy overpriced treats from a convenience store or gas station. 

What rewards will you get as you start to become financially educated?

Understand your own “financial freedom number!”

Ability to afford more as you learn your own “money rules”

Buy yourself treats and holidays without stress because you’ve worked those things into your budget of paying yourself first by saving!

You will start to ask yourself, “what can I afford?” versus telling your kids “we can’t afford that!”

Retire in the 0% tax bracket so you don’t have to worry as taxes rise in the future!

Be confident that your retirement accounts will not plummet with the next downward market correction.

Be confident your family will be financially protected, God forbid anything happens to you in the future and you can’t work or worse case scenario you pass away.

Be able to afford college for your kids without burdening them with a huge student loan at the end.

Be confident that you are saving enough to live a stress free retirement.  

Have multiple sources of income that will continue to pay you “Mail-box” passive, residual income in your investments!
